Intro to Pranayama & Breath Anatomy
Next Session Sun. Nov. 5th 2-5p
- Kula Yoga & Barre
Service Description
Our workshop will focus on the practice of pranayama. Pranayama is the practice of breath control. In Sanskrit, “prana” means life energy, and “yama” means control. We use pranayama to control our life force, so it is balanced. Balancing our energy helps us to settle our thoughts and sharpen our awareness. The teacher will lead a mindful, Yogic breath-work practice during our workshop. Awareness of the breath will be demonstrated to the students, and basic breath techniques will be taught to demonstrate how mindful breathing can focus our awareness and inspire a feeling of peacefulness. Anatomy of the breath will be taught so participants understand the respiration process to inform their pranayama practice. Some of the breathwork practices we'll cover in the workshop are: Nadi Shodhana, also known as Alternate Nostril Breathing- This is a fundamental yet powerful breathing practice that can benefit everyone. Nadi is a Sanskrit word meaning “channel” or “meridian” and shodhana means “purification.” Therefore, nadi shodhana is practiced to balance the subtle anatomy channels and promote overall well-being. This breath-work practice can be done daily or at the beginning of your yoga asana practice. Ujjai Breath or victorious breath- People commonly learn about this pranayama practice in a yoga class, but it's versatile and can be used throughout the day and even before bed. I think of it like the lavender of breathing techniques because it helps to improve focus and is grounding. Bumble Bee Breath or Bhramari Pranayama- Another fabulous breathing technique to have in your arsenal, it will calm your mind and is a go-to stress and anxiety reliever. Its also been proven to lower your blood pressure and tone the vagus nerve! *Required training for our 200-Hour Hybrid YTT and Yoga Teacher Refresher Course. Attendees can join us in-person or on Zoom.
